This is the fourth issue of Weaver’s Newsletter for 2024 and for a 60+ year old television show, it certainly continues to draw fans to events and activities. The Mayberry community has been blessed to have fun new things to be part of both online and in person. There have been trips to Mayberry events found in the Event Calendar and online fun continues to be active. Weaver’s will try and give you a feel for the fun that’s already happened and guide you toward upcoming events you can, and should, attend if possible.
And since this is a newsletter from our online store, Weaver’s is proud to share a few of our newer products related to The Andy Griffith Show that we hope you might want for yourself or as gifts for friends and family.
As a reminder, 53 items have been discontinued and are no longer made by our supplier. A special section of the Weaver’s website has been created so you can check those items to see if any might be something you want to grab while there is still stock available. They are selling out fast.
****Mayberry Comes to Scottsburg****
Hey folks, guess what? There have been some major events related to The Andy Griffith Show since the last Weaver’s newsletter. The biggest one was Mayberry Comes to Scottsburg, Ind.!
This was the second year for this awesome event, and it was even better than the first! There were more tribute artists, more shows, and even more Mayberry-related activities. The whole town of Scottsburg got behind the event and groups like 4-H helped out to make the town into Mayberry.
The fun kicked off on Friday at the park, where families could hang out with vendors and watch free shows. There was Berachah Valley playing bluegrass music and Mayberry tribute artists on hand to make the day as enjoyable as a day in the park in Mayberry would have been for Andy, Opie, and Aunt Bee. They even had all kinds of food and ice cream to really give it that Mayberry feel.
On Friday evening, there was a meet & greet and auctions where people could get autographs from the stars who were there and bid on Mayberry collectibles. The stars included Rodney Dillard (guitar playing Darling boy), Dennis Rush (Opie’s friend “Howie”), Keith Thibodeaux (Opie’s buddy Johnny Paul Jason), Karen Knotts (Don’s daughter), Ronnie Schell (two episodes and Duke Slater on “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.”), Dixie Griffith (Andy’s daughter), Dreama Denver (wife of Dud Wash #2, Bob Denver), and Dick Atkins (Producer of Murder in Coweta County). The food was great as was the entertainment provided by singer/songwriter Daryl Mosley who’s 2023 song “Mayberry State of Mind” is something all Mayberry fans would enjoy. Everyone had a smile on their face as they enjoyed the experience.
Saturday was jam-packed with events all day long. It started with a kickoff parade with all the cast, tribute artists, cars, bands, and everything else you could imagine. The streets were lined with people, and kids were catching candy from the floats like crazy.
After the parade folks could check out two Floyds over at the local barber shop, where both Floyd Lawson (Allan Newsome) and Floyd Colby (Norm Schultz) were on hand to give haircuts and measure sideburns. There were also trivia contests, pie eating contests, autograph sessions, a great interview of Keith Thibodeaux and Dennis Rush by author Randy Turner, a showing of the complete Mayberry Man the Series at the beautiful Ross Theater, and concerts by both The Dillards staring Rodney Dillard & David and The Giants featuring Keith Thibodeaux on drums. What a day!
And that’s not all! On Sunday, there was a car show and more performances by Mayberry tribute artists with Berachah Valley, shows by Ronnie Schell and Karen Knotts, a showing of the Mayberry Man movie, and a showing of the Andy Griffith movie Murder in Coweta County followed by a Q&A with the movie’s producer Dick Atkins.
Mayberry Comes to Scottsburg was a huge event and we definitely recommend you make plans to attend next year. Mark your calendars for the third weekend of June in 2025 and get ready for some Mayberry magic!
****Mayberry Meet-Up 2024****
You won’t believe what happened in Mount Airy, N.C. in July. The 12th annual Mayberry Meetup went down, and it was a blast!
It all started 12 years ago when Allan Newsome, the host of the “Two Chairs No Waiting” podcast, and his wife Jan decided to interview Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou) in Mount Airy. They figured they might as well invite the podcast listeners to join them, and to their surprise, a bunch of people showed up!
Since then, the Mayberry Meetup has grown bigger and bigger. This year, well more than one hundred people came out to celebrate all things Mayberry. They hung out at the Mayberry Motor Inn gazebo, snacked on picnic food, and watched episodes of The Andy Griffith Show on a big screen.
The Meet-Up started in earnest on Friday evening around 6pm with folks gathering around the gazebo to visit and share stories. There was some rain that came through but it cleared out by dark so those that braved the weather, that people talk about but nobody does anything about, were able to enjoy four or five episodes on the big screen before things were packed in for the night.
On Saturday, many went to the Andy Griffith Museum and took part in Professor Brower’s class, where they watched an episode of the show and heard from Neal Brower about the creation and behind-the-scenes stories. Neal had a special guest speaker, Codie Sloan, who provided information about the actual locations used in the filming of the episode. It was a lot of fun, and over 80 people attended the professor’s class!
The evening saw Meet-Up attendees return to the Mayberry Motor Inn gazebo for things like an amateur tribute artist parade, trivia, silent auction, door prizes from Weaver’s Department Store and stories. Around 8:45 pm it was dark enough for the projections to be seen. Somewhere near 11 pm, the shows came to an end but folks stayed around talking in the gazebo and near the pool until well into the morning.
Since Sunday of the Meet-Up weekend would be Don Knotts’ 100th birthday, episodes featured Barney in tribute throughout the event.
Sunday morning featured the Mayberry Bible Study for those able to attend. The study was about the episode “The Jinx.” The completion of the study was the official end of Mayberry Meet-Up #12 with folks heading back to the real world.
It was a wonderful weekend with folks having time to do the things around Mt. Airy during the day that they may not have time to do during Mayberry Days. The Mayberry Meet-up give us time to sit back and enjoy Andy’s hometown. “What’s your hurry?”
**** Merchandise Update ****
One of Weaver’s suppliers of The Andy Griffith Show licensed t-shirts & sweatshirts are no longer producing Mayberry themed products. 53 different items are no longer being produced. What that means for you is that as soon as Weaver’s inventory of those items in stock are gone, they can not be re-stocked. IF there are particular items you’re interested in having, purchase them before they are gone.
A very incomplete list is: Lawmen, Fishin Hole, Barney Face – Woven Throw, Beach Towels, Pillows, Pillowcases, Bandanas, and Accessory Pouches.
These are just some of the items that are discontinued. Basically, if there is the face of a character on the shirt, it is very likely discontinued. It isn’t just t-shirts and sweatshirts. There are so many on the chopping block that I really can’t list them all. Clicking this link will take you to a page a Weaver’s that list all the discontinued products.
It’s pretty shocking when you see how many things that are no longer being made but don’t worry. Weaver’s is hard at work to find more fun Mayberry items for you to enjoy like the ones below.

****Happy 100th Birthday to Don Knotts****
As mentioned above, the folks at the Mayberry Meet-Up paid tribute to Don Knotts in honor of his Sunday July 21st birthday. One hundred years since the birth of our favorite deputy is certainly something to be celebrated and there were other celebrations around the country.
One was in Macon, Mo. and the other was in Morgantown, W. Va. Weaver’s doesn’t yet have the details about how the Morgantown event went but we did get the following.
The City of Morgantown unveiled a special tribute to Don Knotts on Fife Ave, named for Knott’s iconic character, Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. The street sign commemorates the 100 years since the beloved actor’s birth. Bill Knotts, Don Knotts’ nephew, provided a wonderful presentation guiding fans on a captivating trip back in time to the idyllic town of Mayberry and providing information about his uncle.
The Blood Brothers (Macon, Mo.) sponsored Barney 100th Birthday Bash and it was a big success! One of the special guest was Randy Turner and he had this to say:
What a great time I had presenting at Barney’s 100th Birthday Bash, an event in Macon, Missouri, organized by my friend Johnna Clarke, held on July 21, 2024, the centennial of Don Knotts’ birth. I was proud to follow the wonderful bluegrass band Keota with an audio/visual presentation titled “The Incredible Career of Don Knotts.” After an intermission with cookies and drinks for all, the great Sean Dietrich (Sean Of The South) took the stage for a fun-filled show. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.

Here’s the “official” report from Blood Brother’s own Johnna Clark:
The Blood Brothers Chapter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club in cooperation with Carousel Productions of Macon, Mo, hosted Barney’s Birthday Bash in honor of the 100th birthday of Don Knotts. After two years of planning, the day arrived with much anticipation and glee. Johnna and Robert Clarke, co-leaders of Blood Brothers, coordinated the event and led an awesome group of team members to work the various aspects of the day.
Folks from 13 different states filled both the main floor and balcony of the historic Royal Theatre in the heart of downtown Macon. Keota, a local favorite acoustic band, opened the party with tunes from TAGS. The concert even featured a loaded goat!
Lastly, Sean Dietrich (aka Sean of the South) took the stage and performed his one man show with humorous stories and musical solos. The party was complete with Sean and Keota sharing the stage together to perform a lively rendition of “I’ll Fly Away.” As always, Sean held a Meet and Greet in one area of the Royal Theatre with Randy Turner and Keota greeting fans in another area.
Immediately following the musical portion of the program, author Randy Turner took the stage to complete a nearly impossible task of speaking about the life and career of Don Knotts in 30 minutes. As usual, Randy did a stellar job of sharing information with the captivated audience. After drawing for door prizes, the crowd was treated to refreshments.
From start to finish, the event lasted over five hours for patrons who wished to attend all aspects of the celebration. Johnna and Robert wish to thank their team for helping create a most memorable event for TAGS fans and hope everyone had as much fun as they did. In the words of Barney Fife, “It was BIG!”
****News of Cast & Crew ****
While their is *some* news of the cast and crew, there’s really not enough to fill the section with information not already mentioned in other portions of the newsletter. We can update, thanks to Peter Ackerman (a.k.a. Miss Ellie’s Boy in the Two Chairs No Waiting chat room), that Elinor Donahue is doing well and that on a recent visit, they enjoyed a boat ride. He reported that she is very happy in her retirement from public life and suggested we just remember her from her public life. Miss Ellie, we will most certainly remember you and wish you the very best. Enjoy your time in retirement.

Starting a chapter of TAGSRWC is still just as easy as it was four decades ago. You simply pick a name that hasn’t previously been selected by another group. Then submit your chapter’s name with your location and a list of your founding members by e-mail to Goober@imayberry.com. That’s all it takes!

This summer saw many chapters traveling to Scottsburg, Ind. and Mount Airy, N.C. Honestly, I can’t call out every chapter that attended the events so I’m sure I’ll miss some. Y’all are going to have to help us here at Weaver’s Newsletter if you want to be mentioned….but I’ll give it a try.
The host/organizer of the Mayberry Comes to Scottsburg event is our own “little fat mayor”, Eric Lowry, and I’m not sure what chapter he’s officially a member of so I’m going to claim him as a member of the “Who’s Been Messin’ Up the Bulletin Board?” chapter (internet).. He spearheaded the event and put his sweat and heart into making the event a successful and fun one for those that attended. Among chapters spotted in Scottsburg were the Mayberry chapter (Knoxville, Tenn.), The Gomer and Goober Pyle Comic Book Literary Guild chapter (Cincinnati, Ohio), A Dollar and a Quarter chapter (New Philadelphia, Ohio), Blood Brothers (Macon, Mo.), Remembering Mayberry (Chillicothe, Ohio), Mother Figure (Huntsville, Ala.), “Now You’re Gonna Glenn Ford It All Over Town” chapter (Lafayette, Ind.), “Still Ugly, Single and Pitting Prunes” chapter (Casey, Ill.), The Mayberry Cronies (Sebring, Ohio), What Did Calvin Coolidge Say? (Batesville, Ind.), Trivial Trivialities chapter (Pawleys Island, S.C.), Bobby Fleet’s Band With a Beat (Raleigh, N.C.), Hearty Eatin’ Men and Beautiful Delicate Women (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), and other chapters I am sure I missed. Got Time to Breathe Got Time for Music (Blountville, Tenn.) chapters Tim White was honored just days after the Mayberry Meet-Up by the folks in the Bannertown community of Mount Airy for the amazing 45-foot-long mural painted on a wall outside Speedy Chef that now welcome travelers on South Main Street as they enter Bannertown. It’s a picture no artist could draw….other than Tim, that is. At-a-boy Tim!

There’s a new episode every Tuesday (and you can watch and listen during live recording of the show on Monday evenings at 8pm ET @ live.twochairsnowaiting.com ). As of this week, there have been a mind-boggling 797 episodes since Allan launched the podcast over 15 years ago, in October 2008. Past episodes are in an online Archives in case you want to listen to or view the YouTube video installments you’ve missed. Surely you can find a few episodes you’d enjoy out of all those that are available. OH….they are all FREE!
