The weather all weekend was absolutely beautiful. The crowds were big, the shows were mostly sold out, and the reports coming in have been nothing but good. We certainly wish you could have been there to experience it — and maybe you were. If not, we’ll have a report later in the newsletter about what occurred during the weekend.

Mrs. Weaver has been hard at work finding new products for our store. With Christmas coming, you’ll definitely want to come see all the new items. There are probably more than we can fit in this newsletter. We’re excited to show them to you, and we hope they’ll make you just as excited to have one for yourself or to give as a gift this season.

So, on with the newsletter, and thank you for your support of Weaver’s Department Store!

2027 Mayberry Wall Calendar – $17

The new 2027 calendar features ALL NEW calendar images for each month!

Plan your year in Mayberry! The weather was cool and a bit damp on Wednesday. Having left Alabama with 95° temperatures, the 65° temperatures in Mount Airy were a bit of a shock. That didn’t dampen our spirits, though. We headed downtown to visit the shops, eat at the Snappy Lunch, and visit with fellow fans before the large-scale activities of Mayberry Days began. That evening, a large group of Mayberry family members headed to Dobson and The Depot Restaurant to share a meal, visit, and catch up on what had happened to one another since our last gathering.

Mayberry Days is almost like a family reunion. There are so many people we see only once or twice a year who are big Mayberry fans, and anytime we can get together and visit is cherished.

Mt. Golfers from all over gather and play at Cross Creek Country Club. The special guests all gather on the porch of the pro shop to wish the golfers well and happy hitting out on the course. There was a slight drizzle that stopped just before the golfers took to the course. Following the tournament is the golf dinner, where awards are given from the best team all the way down to the worst score. Those attending, whether golfers or just fans, were entertained by Michael Hoover and Denise Glass, who sang as Elvis and Patsy Cline. The special guests were set up in the back to sign autographs and meet people. If you want the shortest lines and a real chance to interact with the special guests, this is the place to be each year.

Mt. There was a big crowd at the Blackmon Amphitheatre to see the dignitaries, special guests, and tribute artists gathered on the stage. Before it started, everyone was getting pictures and hugging one another down front, and then the proclamation began. We were welcomed by the Surry Arts Council and the mayor of Mount Airy, and each of the special guests had a chance to come forward and say a few words.

One of our special guests this year was Kathy Garver. She isn’t directly connected to The Andy Griffith Show, but she was friends with Betty Lynn and narrated the audiobook of Betty Lynn’s memoir. You probably already know her as Cissy on the TV series Family Affair. She has also done plenty of other work some of us know, including the voice of Firestar on a Spider-Man cartoon, along with many other voice-acting appearances. She’s also friends with Dreama Denver and some of the other cast members who were present. What a wonderful addition she was to Mayberry Days, and she received the key to the city of Mount Airy.

After that, there were so many things going on in Mount Airy on Friday that it’s hard to even try to report on each one. There were shows by Karen Knotts, Rodney Dillard, and Tim White and Troublesome Hollow, plus the horseshoe-throwing contest and so much more. Honestly, the only way to know everything that was going on was to have a copy of the Mayberry Confidential, which contained the schedule.

The Mayberry Days trivia contest also happened on Friday. Randy Turner had presentations, and Neal Brower did one of two presentations. I’m leaving people out, and I hope they’re not mad at me for it, but there was so much to choose from.

Mt. (Photo: Hobart Jones)

On Saturday, the Mayberry Days parade got things started, followed by a day full of events similar to Friday. The day ended with an almost three-hour Colonel Tim’s Talent Time at the Andy Griffith Playhouse.

Colonel Tim’s received great reviews from the people I spoke with and heard from. Of course, they were talking to me, so maybe you need to research for yourself how well it went. From a performer’s standpoint, though, I thought it was an amazing show and well worth the money and the time.

Mayberry Days continued at a slower pace into Sunday, with the chapel service, Mayberry Melodies playing a gospel performance, and finally some movies down at the Historic Earle Theatre featuring Andy Griffith.

Mayberry Days is truly a special time, when friends come together and celebrate a show that is now 66 years old. This year we also celebrated Andy and Betty’s 100th birthday year. I hope you’ll think about trying to attend in the future if you haven’t. The show continues to air somewhere almost every day, and there are generations of viewers who can sit down and watch an episode they’ve already seen dozens of times. And here’s the really amazing part: we usually know what’s going to happen.

We know Barney is going to get himself into trouble. We know Andy will probably figure out what’s going on. We know Aunt Bee’s good intentions may create a problem of their own. We know Opie will probably learn something before the final credits roll. And yet, we watch.

Again.

And again.

Why?

I think the answer is that The Andy Griffith Show isn’t simply a television program we watch. Mayberry is a place we visit.

Mayberry Feels Like Home

One of the great accomplishments of The Andy Griffith Show is that it created a community that feels familiar.

We know the courthouse. We know the jail. We know Floyd’s Barbershop. We know the filling station. We know Andy’s house. We know the streets of Mayberry. More importantly, we know the people.

That’s a little different from most television shows. We aren’t necessarily tuning in because we’re wondering what the plot is going to be. We’ve probably seen the episode before. We’re tuning in because we want to spend a little time with people we know. And that’s a powerful thing.

When Barney Fife walks into the courthouse, we don’t have to be introduced to Barney. We already know Barney. We know his personality, his insecurities, his ambitions and his tendency to turn a simple situation into something much more complicated.

And we love him anyway.

The Characters Are the Secret

The characters are one of the biggest reasons the show has lasted. Barney is funny, of course, but he’s not simply a cartoon character. He’s a person. He’s proud. He’s insecure. He wants to be respected. He wants to be a great lawman. He wants Thelma Lou to think he’s special. Most of all, he wants Andy’s approval.

That’s why Barney remains funny even after we’ve heard his lines over and over. We aren’t just laughing at Barney. We care about Barney.

And then there’s Andy. Andy is the calm center of Mayberry. He doesn’t have to prove that he’s the smartest person in the room. He listens. He watches. He understands people. And he likes people. That’s an important quality.

When Barney gets himself into trouble, Andy doesn’t try to embarrass him. He tries to help him. When one of the citizens of Mayberry has a problem, Andy generally looks for a way to solve it rather than simply punish somebody.

Andy gives the town stability. When things get a little crazy, we know Andy is there. And somehow, that makes us feel better.

Mayberry Isn’t Cynical

Another reason the show has aged so well is that it isn’t particularly cynical.

People make mistakes in Mayberry.

People get jealous.

People misunderstand one another.

People get embarrassed.

People sometimes behave foolishly.

But underneath all of that is a basic belief that people are worth caring about. The comedy doesn’t require somebody to be humiliated or destroyed.

We laugh at Barney’s mistakes, but we don’t want Barney to fail. We laugh when Opie gets himself into trouble, but we want him to learn from it.

There’s warmth underneath the comedy and perhaps that warmth is one reason the show still feels so refreshing.

A Community of Familiar Faces

Mayberry also feels real because of all those people who live around the edges of Andy’s world.

Floyd Lawson – Goober Pyle – Gomer Pyle – Otis Campbell – Thelma Lou – Clara Edwards – Howard Sprague – Emmett Clark – Ernest T. Bass and so many others.

They make Mayberry feel like a community instead of a collection of sets.

You can imagine these people continuing to live their lives even when the cameras aren’t rolling. That’s one of the great compliments you can pay a television town. It feels like it exists beyond the episode.

The Pace of Mayberry

There’s another thing about Mayberry that we may appreciate more today than ever before.

People take time to talk.

They sit on porches.

They sit in the courthouse.

They visit Floyd’s Barbershop.

They go fishing.

They stand around and discuss things that, by today’s standards, probably don’t seem terribly important.

And that’s part of the charm. Nobody seems to be in quite the hurry that we are. Mayberry gives us permission to slow down.

For about 25 minutes, we can leave the modern world behind and spend some time in a place where the biggest problem of the day might be Barney getting his feelings hurt or Andy trying to figure out how to handle one of Barney’s latest ideas.

There’s something comforting about that.

The Show Is About People

That’s probably the biggest reason the show continues to work.

The technology has changed. The clothes have changed. The cars have changed. The world has certainly changed. But people haven’t changed nearly as much.

We still want to be liked. We still get embarrassed. We still worry about what other people think. We still fall in love. We still make mistakes. We still try to hide those mistakes.

And we still need friends. That’s why a story written more than 60 years ago can still make us laugh.

The circumstances may be different, but the people are familiar and perhaps that’s why we keep coming back.

We’re not really returning to 1960. We’re returning to people we know.

And as long as Andy, Barney, Aunt Bee and Opie are there waiting for us, I suspect Mayberry will continue to feel like home.

After all, there’s always room for one more visitor. She played the pretty county nurse that Andy and Helen tried to fix up with Howard Sprague. It was Howard’s first real chance at a social life, complete with his mother doing her best to keep him home. Nina brought a warm, natural charm to the role that made the matchmaking story feel genuine.

Nina came from a show-business family—her father was screenwriter Barry Shipman, her mother was actress and dancer Gwynne Shipman, and her grandmother was silent-film star Nell Shipman. After studying music and training with Sanford Meisner, she worked steadily in film and television through the 1950s and ’60s. Fans may also recognize her from a memorable The Munsters episode, appearances on Bonanza, Perry Mason, The Beverly Hillbillies, and other classic shows, plus films including a brief uncredited moment in Hitchcock’s Vertigo and a leading role opposite Fred MacMurray in The Oregon Trail.

In later years she stepped back from acting, wrote a book on commercial acting, taught, and pursued interests that included piano and falconry. She is survived by her daughters Westerly and Lani and her grandchildren.

Nina’s single visit to Mayberry was a small but pleasant one, and she helped introduce us to Howard Sprague in a way that still makes us smile.
