Welcome to the Weaver’s Newsletter<\/strong> Mar\/Apr 2026!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hello Mayberry and welcome to another Weaver’s Newsletter<\/strong>! It’s always good to spend time thinking about and reading about the goings-on around Mayberry. It’s been 65 years that we have enjoyed the people of the town of Mayberry, and it just never gets old.<\/p>\n\n\n

\"Mr.<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

I think about the people who live in our hometown, and it makes me smile. I laugh along with Andy ‘cuz I see Barney, Floyd, Goober, Gomer, and the rest of the Mayberry gang do things that in real life would likely drive me crazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was watching “Barney and the Choir” just yesterday, and seeing how Barney behaves when he thinks he can sing and everybody else knows he can’t. That behavior in real life would be more than I could handle. But seeing them do that on “The Andy Griffith Show,” and loving the characters like I do, it only makes me smile as Andy suffers. Well, not just Andy; everybody in the choir suffers. I guess that’s why it’s okay because it’s happening in Mayberry. And because, well, it’s Barney. And we all know how Barney behaves. We expect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is that why we love it? Because we know these people who live in our hometown so well? Because we know what to expect and even anticipate the behavior? I guess there’s something to be said for that, because it feels familiar. It’s comforting. These people are our neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s too bad most of us don’t have neighbors like that in the real world. People that we know, understand, and put up with. How many of us don’t even know the names of the people who live next door to us? I’ve lived in the same house for almost 30 years and I have neighbors on four sides of my house, and I only know the names of one of them. Isn’t that kind of sad?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I mean, it is my fault that I don’t know their names. I can certainly ask, but I don’t. Or, even more truthfully, I have asked, but I can’t seem to remember. It’s sad I can’t remember names, but it’s the truth. Oh, I can remember their dog’s name, but the person’s name that lives beside me seems to just float right out of my mind. Maybe I’m a lot more like Floyd than I’d like to admit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not saying that any of us are bad because we don’t know everything about our neighbors. But I do sometimes wonder what the world would be like if those of us who love Mayberry actually tried to make Mayberry real in our own neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I guess that’s a little philosophical meandering from Floyd, but maybe something for us all, myself most of all, to think about. Do what we can to make Mayberry real in our own world. What a nice goal to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, I’m going to keep laughing at the people who live in our hometown every chance I get so that I have that Mayberry spirit inside that I might actually share with others. I encourage you to do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayberry – I Love Lucy Festival<\/h2>\n\n\n

It’s not long now until Mayberry fans will gather for the Mayberry I Love Lucy Festival<\/a><\/strong> in Granville, Tenn. There may not even be enough time for you to plan to be there, but if you can, I certainly hope you will be.<\/p>\n\n\n

Granville, Tenn <\/strong>– Dennis Rush & Keith Thibodeaux holding court.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Randall and the other volunteers that put on the event in Granville have worked so hard to make their town into Tennessee’s Mayberry town, and they want to share it with us all. For the festival weekend, we’re going to have folks from everywhere driving into the town that is even smaller than Mayberry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keith Thibodeaux<\/strong> (Johnny Paul) and Dennis Rush<\/strong> (Howie)  are the special guests from the show. Dixie Griffith,  Karen Knotts, and Peter Ackerman (Miss Ellie\u2019s boy)  are special guests from families on the show. Neil Brower and Randy Turner are special guests that write about the show. And a whole troupe of tribute artists who dress up and pretend to be people from the show\u2014they’re all going to be there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main events are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 10th and 11th, right in the center of downtown Granville, Tennessee. There are so many things scheduled that you really need to come both days. You see, Granville is so small they don’t have a venue that can hold all the people, so they have events scheduled throughout the day on both Friday and Saturday that overlap; if you can’t go to one on Friday, you get tickets to go to that event on Saturday because one starts 30 minutes after the other, so you can’t do them both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s not room in most of the events to handle all the people who might want to attend both, as I mentioned above, so they spread them out throughout the weekend to try to make it as easy as possible for people to get to see their most desired show.<\/p>\n\n\n

Saturday night wraps up with the grand finale event, which is unlike any other you’ve attended at a Mayberry event before. You see, since the venues are small, you have a progressive show\u2014kind of like a progressive dinner, if you’ve ever been to one of those. You start at one show (it’s 20 minutes long), then you move to another venue and have another 20-minute show. That continues until you have gone through three or four shows and a dinner. You’ve got Elvis singing to you while you eat, you’ve got Little Ricky\/Johnny Paul Jason and Howie  entertaining you at another event, you’ve got a group of Mayberry tribute artists over at the gazebo with Floyd the Barber at the barber shop, and you’ve got Charlene, Briscoe, Ernest T., and Hoggette Winslow over at the Darling cabin doing a show there. And of course, we have our special guests from the show\u2019s families, like Karen, Dixie and Peter, fit into one of those shows for you to enjoy. Like Opie might have said, “It’s a sight!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make plans to come if you possibly can. I know that the folks there in Granville would appreciate it. And I know you’ll enjoy it. If you don’t leave with a smile on your face after being there, I’ll have Floyd give you a free haircut next time you see him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Essential Mayberry: Behind the Scenes of The Andy Griffith Show

Neal Brower is a long time superfan and show expert who has been writing and even teaching courses about The Andy Griffith Show<\/em> for over thirty years. He has made it his mission to gather the lore about the show and especially about the writing and production of the scripts. Brower interviewed many of the show\u2019s writers including Harvey Bullock, Everett Greenbaum, Sam Bobrick, and their partners and collected his findings in his 2011 book, Mayberry 101<\/a>. As Gomer would say, \u201cWell, golly!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this second & updated edition of the popular book, now called The Essential Mayberry: Behind the Scenes of The Andy Griffith Show<\/em><\/strong>, Brower has added the scripts written by Jack Elinson and his writing partner Charles Stewart and the rewrites of producer and story consultant Aaron Ruben, as well as material from the annotated show scripts donated by Andy Griffith to UNC Libraries. \u201cShazam!\u201d Fans of The Andy Griffith Show<\/em> will receive a long-awaited and more complete picture of the classic television show and its creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spring has arrived and folks have been singing “Welcome, Sweet Springtime<\/em>” at the top of their lungs as they enjoy, or get ready to enjoy, the warm weather. “Two Chairs, No Waitin<\/em><\/strong>g<\/a>” podcast episode number 884 spent an entire episode reviewing “Barney and the Choir<\/strong><\/a>” recently. I think you would enjoy it if you give it a watch because the video version shows an event from 2004 when Don Knotts<\/strong> himself recreated the scene of him singing “Welcome, Sweet Springtime<\/em>” (or “Good Old 14a”) with the Mayberry choir. Not only was Don there at the event at the Opryland Hotel (organized and directed by Phillip Stegner), but so was Betty Lynn<\/strong>. She’s featured in the video as well, giving us the scoop on the fact that Barney can’t sing\u2014”not a lick!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The episode is worth a watch for that portion alone, so you’re invited to head over there and give it a look. I think you’re going to enjoy it; I know I did, and I was hosting it! There’s nothing like memories of Mayberry to make you smile, and I can’t believe you could possibly see Don dressed in his salt-and-pepper suit singing “Good Old 14a” and not have a grin going wide across your face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
