Granville has come to be known as “Tennessee’s Mayberry Town” partially because of it’s small town atmosphere as well as because of their wonderful collections found in their Mayberry-I Love Lucy Museum. This years event featured special guests include Dennis Rush (Howie Pruitt in Mayberrry), Keith Thibodeaux (Johnny Paul Jason on “The Andy Griffith Show” Mayberry and Little Ricky on “I Love Lucy“), Dixie Griffith (daughter of Andy) and Karen Knotts (daughter of Don). Granville also hosted 18 Mayberry, 2 I Love Lucy, and an Elvis tribute artist. How can you beat an event Elvis, Andy and Lucy?

I should let you in on a secret, while the event was advertised as beginning on Friday April 11th, in truth you could have started the fun early on Thursday night, April 10th with two performances of their Mayberry Dinner Theater. Each performance featured two plays with each being a live recreation of an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. Not to worry, if you missed out on the Thursday night performances, they repeated them on Friday evening. The “Sutton Players,” as they are known, put on these type plays several time per year and especially during the Christmas and Valentine seasons. If you are in or near Granville, consider attending one of the plays sometime as “they’re goooood.”

Back to the Mayberry-Lucy Festival, things kicked off on Friday and continued through the evening on Saturday. As part of the April 29.2025 episode of the Two Chairs No Waiting Andy Griffith Show Podcast, listeners Steve & Rita Jackson (WBMUTBB Chapter) provided his report about the festival.

Indiana Steve here with my thoughts on our first trip to the Mayberry I Love Lucy Festival in Granville, Tennessee.

Overall, I would have to say Rita and I loved it. By far, our favorite thing was seeing our friends that came from all over to attend this festival as well. The town is small, but that’s its charm. All its citizens were extremely friendly, and you can easily walk to all the different venues and never get lost.

Saturday was our favorite day. We got to see tribute artists performing on stages, “Charlene” singing with the bluegrass band, interviews by Allan (Newsome) with Dennis Rush (Howie) and Keith Thibodeaux (Johnny Paul), and Randy Turner talking to Dixie Griffith and Karen Knotts.

Saturday night was the cats. It started with a delicious meal of catfish and chicken (with “Elvis” singing for our dinner), and then we proceeded to four different stations for some outstanding entertainment.

They were all great, but when we got to the gazebo where Floyd, Ernest T., and Mayor Pike were, I thought I’d bust a gusset. Our group was cracking jokes with tributes and a nonstop free-for-all of laughter.

After we first got to Granville, I thought this might be a “one and done” for us. But by the end of the weekend, we were hooked, and we will be back.

Rita and I can’t express how much we enjoy the friendship and entertainment of all our tribute artist friends, and we are proud to be part of the Mayberry family.

Thank you to Steve for that wonderful first hand report. I (Allan) always like hearing from our Mayberry family regarding their experience at events. As many of you are aware, I am the Mayberry tribute artist for “Floyd” so I have a different experience when attending events. As a fan, I love these events so I’m always happy to hear those attending have experiences that will draw them back to the next event.

As Steve mentioned, as part of the Mayberry – I Love Lucy Festival, I was honored to interview “Opie’s Pals” Dennis Rush (Howie) and Keith Thibodeaux (Johnny Paul) once on Friday and again on Saturday. Over the last 30 years that I’ve been attending events, we have lost cast members and we no longer have a chance to see them but, there are still special guests who attend and I don’t want you to miss that chance for an experience you’ll long remember.

Well, I’ll step off my soapbox now and we’ll get back to the newsletter and to the Event Calendar.- Allan

Barber Shop Shaving Kit
(Each sold separately)

The 11oz white enamel camp mug features the artwork of the Two Chairs No Waiting podcast. The festival was such a success that it returned again in 2024. Thousands of Mayberry fans came to Scottsburg to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere created by our volunteers, sponsors and the Mayberry family.

Sadly, in November 2024 our family was rocked by a serious medical situation. Our son was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma. This shocking news sent us reeling and required us to focus all our energy on medical appointments, treatment plans and other major life changes. While we wanted very much to hold the festival this year, ultimately our family decided that our priority needed to be our son.

Now for some good news. Our son is progressing through chemotherapy. He has a way to go yet, but he’s received good reports regarding the effectiveness of the treatment. In a way, our hiatus has caused many of us to have a greater appreciation for Mayberry Comes to Scottsburg and all it means to our community.

We have begun preliminary planning for the 2026 version of the festival and have some exciting ideas to build on the success of the first two years. We’re planning some major announcements starting in June and continuing over the remainder of 2025. So, stay tuned and begin making your plans to join us. It didn’t start off to be an annual event. The event started when Allan Newsome, host of the Two Chairs No Waiting podcast, went to Mount Airy to interview Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou). Like other podcasters, he thought it would be nice to have a “get-together” with podcast listeners who were in Mount Airy the weekend of Betty Lynn’s interview. He thought there would be one or two or maybe even four people that might want to “meet up” with him and his wife Jan. After mentioning the possibility of meeting up, almost 30 people said, “we’ll meet up with you.”

As stated, Allan didn’t believe there would be a great number of people wanting to meet up. His plan had been to go out to dinner with those who said they could meet up. If 30 people were going to be there, he thought “what am I going to do to entertain these folks?” It wouldn’t be practical for a large group to go out to dinner and have a meaningful conversation. So he and Jan started thinking and came up with an idea. Everyone could meet in the gazebo at the Mayberry Motor Inn and watch episodes of The Andy Griffith Show on a projector screen. We’d be outside so there would be plenty of room for all to gather and talk. This plan was put into action on the Friday and Saturday of the weekend in 2013 when Allan interviewed Betty.

There was no intention that this event would be a yearly thing. Soon after the event, Allan started receiving inquiries asking, “When is the event next year?” Next year? Allan thought. It was a one time thing. There was no intention to do it again next year. But, so many people were asking about “next year” that he contacted the Mayberry Motor Inn and asked when would be the best weekend in July for us to take over the gazebo and do a Mayberry Meetup

The Mayberry Motor Inn gave us a suggested weekend and enthusiastic permission to use their grounds. They thought it would be great to have “Mayberry” people come visit and fellowship. That’s how the Mayberry Meetup was born.

2025 will mark the 13th annual Mayberry Meetup. Fans gather in Mount Airy do whatever they would like to do during the daytime hours. They visit the Andy Griffith Museum, go on a squad car or trolley tour, attend Neil Brower’s Professor Brower’s class at the Andy Griffith Museum Theater, go hiking over at Pilot Mountain, drive up to the Mayberry Trading Post on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or just relax and visit with fellow fans in town.

Friday and Saturday evening is reserved for everyone to come to the gazebo in the courtyard of The Mayberry Motor Inn. Visitors can enjoy time with fellow fans, bring a picnic dinner, a blanket, or lawn chairs, and watch episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and other Mayberry-related videos as it gets dark.

It’s a very relaxing weekend that is definitely not to replace Mayberry Days as your primary visit to Mount Airy. It’s a fun time to come with a smaller group of about 150 people that are fans of the show and see the things you might not have time to see during the BIG Mayberry Days event held the last full weekend of September.

Information about the Mayberry Meetup can be found at this link. Attendees are encouraged to register, though it is not required. Registering helps organizers have an idea of how many are attending and allows them to provide updates to schedules in the event of changes.

Don’t be afraid to attend this year just because it’s the 13th annual. We can refer to it as the 12 + 1 Annual Mayberry Meetup if you feel better about it. At 71, Ron has primarily focused on directing and producing, notably through Imagine Entertainment with Brian Grazer, but he recently played himself in an episode of The Studio and enjoyed the experience. He mentioned, “It is endlessly fascinating and…” indicating his openness to acting again under the right circumstances, particularly for a project directed by his 44-year-old daughter.

Of Ron’s acting in The Studio his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard, herself an actor, found that she was more nervous than her father for his return to the screen.
