Wow…it’s hard to believe this the first issue of Weaver’s Newsletter for 2025. It seems like just days since I was writing the first issue of 2023. It was in February 2023 when I (Allan Newsome) took over as writer & editor from  Jim Clark, Presiding Goober Emeritus of TAGS<\/em>RWC. Jim had been filling those responsibilities from the inception of the both this newsletter as well as the TAGS<\/em>RWC newsletter in all its versions (The Bullet, The eBullet, The Pocket, and The Button<\/em>). Putting together issues of the newsletter is not a small endeavor and based upon my experience over the last 2 years, Mayberry fans all owe Jim a BIG thank you for keeping all of us “in the loop” about The Andy Griffith Show world over the many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far, I haven’t run off too many of our loyal readers and I hope to continue to bring fun, smiles and information to the citizens of the Mayberry community. My respect for what Jim did gathering Mayberry related information in the time *before* the Internet grows with each issue. It is hard to find information requiring a lot of digging a Jim did it for 40 years. He has a right to be mighty proud of himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of proud, Mrs. Weaver has been hard at work finding new & fun Mayberry related items for Weaver’s Department Store. She has been running Weaver’s since 2015 and has done a great job of maintaining a sense of family with our customers. Many of you have seen the “little extras” that show up in your order. Be it a note from Jan (a.k.a. Mrs. Weaver), a “hat size,” a trading card, or sometimes even the box the item is shipped in (Miracle Salve), customers get a little piece of Mayberry fun to go along with their order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weaver’s has been very happy to bring fans a Mayberry calendar for 2025!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weaver’s reached out to artist, Christina Green and asked if she might be able to create artwork related to our hometown and the result is a sight to behold. Weaver’s had to order additional calendars 3 times in an attempt to meet the demand. We only have a very few remaining and when they’re gone….they’re gone….unlike Tom Silby, they won’t come back when they’re gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plan your year in Mayberry! Start each month with a different landmark around Mayberry done in a watercolor art style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each month fills a full two page opening with an image at the top and calendar page on the bottom. Jot down plans and notes. Each month points out cast member birthdays, special occasions and events. ****Mayberry First Years****<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As the new year begins, I have been reflecting that there are many folks out there that love The Andy Griffith Show<\/em> <\/strong>but may not be in the graduate studies program. They are “First Years” in that they enjoy watching the episodes but may not know all the things students in their “Eighth Year” might be aware of. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are in that group, or if you just want to brush up on your studies, this column is for you. We’ll begin with a few basics that will help lay the foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n

Danny Meets Andy Griffith (1960)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

There are eight seasons of The Andy Griffith Show<\/strong><\/em> (TAGS<\/strong><\/em>) with the first five seasons being filmed in black and white. In season six the series began its three “color” seasons and the character of Barney Fife moved away from Mayberry for new adventures in the “big” city of Raleigh. There were 249 total episodes of TAGS <\/strong><\/em>with 90 of them being color and 159 black & white running from October 3, 1960 until April 1, 1968 when the episode “Mayberry, RFD<\/em>” aired. The town of Mayberry continued to be on television screens for in the series “Mayberry, R.F.D.<\/strong><\/em>” from September 23, 1968 through March 29, 1971 but for now we’ll focus our attention on the original series as our topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTE:<\/strong> The 249 episode total does not include the episode of “The Danny Thomas Show<\/em><\/strong>” called “Danny Meets Andy Griffith<\/em>” (S7.E20) which acted as a pilot for what became “The Andy Griffith Show<\/strong><\/em>.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may have noticed I mentioned the title of the last episode of TAGS <\/em><\/strong>but did you know that every episode has a title? It would be easy to be unaware of that fact because the titles never appear during the 30 minutes an episode is on the screen. The titles were, however, on the scripts used by the production crew and actors when the episodes were being filmed. There are many places you can find listings of the titles by season. The easiest for most is to look them up online. TAGS<\/em>RWC maintains a list on the website Mayberry.info<\/a> where you can find the title broken out by season and by the “filmed” and “aired” order as well as the original air date.<\/p>\n\n\n

As you look at the episode titles, you’ll notice that the order of the list in different books or websites may be different. That’s because some lists order the episodes by the “filmed” order while others use the “aired” order to make their list. As an example, the season 1 episode “Runaway Kid<\/em>” was the 4th episode filmed but it was the 6th episode aired. This discrepancy in filming an episode but holding it to air later in a season is not uncommon for television series. Sometimes executives move episodes air date in order to have a better “flow” to the series or to introduce a new character as they did in this case. The executives chose to move the 6th episode filmed “Ellie Comes to Town<\/em>” to air as the 4th episode to introduce Miss Ellie to the audience earlier in the series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hopefully the episode numbering isn’t confusing to you. In more recent years, the “aired” order of episodes has become the more “normal” way of listing them but neither method is “wrong,” it’s just something you should be aware of when using reference books or online lists. You often see episodes listed in this form: “Ellie Comes to Town<\/em>“(S1.E4) to indicate Season and Episode number. You saw an example above related to TAGS <\/em><\/strong>pilot episode on The Danny Thomas Show<\/em><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the new year beginning, it’s only fitting we discuss the “The New Housekeeper<\/em>” which was the first episode of The Andy Griffith Show<\/strong><\/em> and sat the stage for eight years of enjoyment in Mayberry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
