Ron Howard <\/strong>is executive-producing the re-ignition of Arrested Development<\/em> with new episodes for TV (well, sort of\u2026they\u2019ll be exclusive to Netflix) and possibly a feature film coming to theaters.\u00a0 Ron has also said that he’ll be back as the narrator.<\/p>\n

Ron is in pre-production (as producer and director) for the feature film Rush<\/em> about Formula I racing legend Niki Lauda.\u00a0 And Ron still has plans and hopes\u00a0for the ambitious and complex project of bringing Stephen King\u2019s Dark Towers<\/em> to TV and theaters.\u00a0 Meanwhile, he is scheduled to direct the pilot for a new HBO series about Doc Holliday, and he is executive producer for a Sarah Silverman pilot requested by NBC.<\/p>\n

And Ron is among the executive producers for TNT\u2019s first reality show, \u201cThe Great Escape,\u201d which will begin a 10-episode run this summer. Ron’s Imagine Entertainment has also\u00a0optioned the\u00a0rights for The Tale of the Body Thief<\/em>, the fourth book\u00a0in author Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles series.<\/p>\n

When You Find Me<\/em>, a short film based on\u00a0eight photos Ron selected in a contest called Project Imagin8ion (sponsored by Canon) and directed and co-written by Ron\u2019s oldest daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard, has been receiving good reviews.<\/p>\n

Ron has been making the rounds at various film festivals and awards shows, including Sundance.\u00a0 He\u2019s also a judge for the Greenwich (Conn.) Youth Film Festival this winter.<\/p>\n

And the really big Howard family news is that daughter Bryce had a baby girl on Jan. 19.\u00a0 Her name is Beatrice Jean Howard-Gabel.\u00a0 (Ron\u2019s late mother\u2019s name was Jean.\u00a0 As for Beatrice, we don\u2019t yet know the inspiration for that, but some of us will have to be excused if we presumptively nickname her Bee.)<\/p>\n

George Lindsey<\/strong> has just returned from\u00a0his 15th<\/sup> Annual George Lindsey UNA Film Festival in Florence, Ala.\u00a0 A highlight of this year’s festival was the dedication of the George Lindsey Theatre on March 2.\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

George’s longtime pal Ernest Borgnine was on hand for the theater dedication.\u00a0 Actor Michael Rooker was the special guest for the film festival, which\u00a0had filmmakers attending from across the country and as far away as Spain.\u00a0 Goober says \u00a1hola.<\/em><\/p>\n

Maggie Peterson<\/strong> and Betty Lynn<\/strong> headlined a successful Mayberry-themed musical fundraiser for Alzheimer\u2019s care and research in Roanoke,Va., in November.\u00a0 Betty is also participating in the Arts Ball fundraiser for the Surry Arts Council in Mount Airy this weekend.<\/p>\n

Dean Webb<\/strong>, Dillards and Darlings mandolin player, is featured in \u201cSounds of Home\u2014Music from the Ozarks\u201d for Ozarks Public Television.\u00a0 Dean is interviewed and performs some music with his current band, Missouri Boatride.\u00a0 The show has aired a couple of times.\u00a0 Viewers in the Ozarks, check your local listings for future airdates\u00a0 Dean and the band are also performing every other Saturday during the winter season in their home base of Kimberling City, Mo.\u00a0 (They\u2019ll also be doing a summer series.)\u00a0 For complete details, visit www.missouriboatride.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rodney and his Dillard Band have been busy touring this year, including for a taping in Marion, Va., of the “Songs of the Mountains” TV show that will eventually air on PBS stations nationwide.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>\"\"<\/a>James Best<\/strong> is well into the editing process for Return of the Killer Shrews.<\/em>\u00a0 The expected to be in theaters this summer. Bernard Fox <\/strong>says that he\u2019s doing well and sends all his best to his Mayberry friends.\u00a0 He\u2019s largely retired from acting, but never say never.\u00a0 He enjoys doing the occasional autograph show in Burbank near his home.<\/p>\n

Also on the literary front, Margaret Kerry<\/strong> (\u201cChristmas Story\u201d and \u201cAndy Forecloses\u201d episodes) is progressing well with writing for Tinker Bell Talks\u2014Tales of a Pixie Dusted Life<\/em>, her autobiography.\u00a0 At last update, she was up to more than 60 chapters!<\/p>\n

We\u2019re sad to report the passing on the same day in December of two actors with featured roles in Mayberry.<\/p>\n

Dan Frazer<\/strong>, who played movie producer Mr. Harmon in \u201cMayberry Goes Hollywood\u201d (Episode 13), died of cardiac arrest at his home in Manhattan on Dec. 16.\u00a0 He was 90.<\/p>\n

He had a long career of steady work, but he’s probably best known for his role as Capt. Frank McNeil on TV\u2019s \u201cKojak.\u201d\u00a0 As for us TAGS fans, we\u2019ll always appreciate his character’s keen eye for what was special and worth protecting about Mayberry.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re also sad to have the news that Robert Easton <\/strong>died of natural causes at his home in Toluca Lake, Calif., on Dec. 16.\u00a0 He was 81.\u00a0 Robert played be-eyelashed Pete Johnson in \u201cIrresistible Andy\u201d (Episode 5).<\/p>\n

Also, actor Laurie Main<\/strong>, who played enthusiastic book designer Robling Flask in “Helen the Authoress” (Episode 213) and also Thornton Avery in “Millie the Model” (Episode 29 of “Mayberry R.F.D.”), died on February 8 in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

According to most sources, Laurie Main was born in Australia in 1922.\u00a0 He moved to London, England at age 16.\u00a0 He appeared in numerous TV shows (ranging from\u00a0“Hogan’s Heroes” and “Bewitched”\u00a0to\u00a0“Murder She Wrote” and “Punky Brewster”) and movies (including Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo<\/em> (with Don Knotts and Bernard Fox).\u00a0 He did voiceovers and other work for many Disney productions, most notably “Welcome to Pooh Corner.”\u00a0 Here’s a link to the obituary\u00a0in The Hollywood Reporter: hollywoodreporter.com\/lauriemain\/<\/a><\/p>\n

And this is not really News of Cast & Crew, but it is about one of Mount Airy’s best-known characters.\u00a0We\u00a0received the sad news that\u00a0 Griggs<\/strong> Hampton<\/strong> (affectionately known simply as \u201cGriggs\u201d to most folks around Mount Airy) died on Dec. 21.\u00a0 He had been convalescing from surgery earlier in the year.<\/p>\n

Griggs was a fixture on the streets of Mount Airy and was ever ready with a smile and a nod in much the way that Mr. Schwamp seems ever present in Mayberry.\u00a0 His friendliness and generosity were instant with everyone he met.\u00a0 He was widely known as one of Mount Airy’s most enthusiastic and successful fundraisers for charity. \u00a0(TAGSRWC has made a donation in memory of Griggs on behalf of our organization as a whole to the Surry Arts Council in Mount Airy.)
