**** News of Cast & Crew ****<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Ron Howard\u00a0<\/span><\/strong> finished filming\u00a0<\/span>Inferno<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>in Europe in July. Now it’s on to some finishing touches and post-production work. The release date for the film is October 2016. (And don’t forget his\u00a0<\/span>In the Heart of the Sea<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>is coming to theaters in December.\u00a0 It’s a whale of a story!)<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Bryce Dallas Howard<\/strong>, Ron’s oldest daughter, is starring in the biggest movie on the planet this summer,\u00a0<\/span>Jurassic World<\/em>, the giant hit that is breaking box office records all over the globe since opening in June.<\/p>\n

Ron and his Imagine Film Entertainment team are also pleased to have secured backing from Sony Pictures and MRC for their ambitious plans to bring\u00a0<\/span>The Dark Tower<\/em>, based on the popular series of novels by Stephen King,<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>to TV and to theaters. As faithful readers of this newsletter will recall, putting all the pieces together for this complex film project (involving equally complex stories) has been a multi-year saga.\u00a0 But it looks like the financial pieces are now in place.<\/p>\n

And Ron and Imagine partner Brian Grazer are part of the team producing an as-yet untitled Beatles documentary, which is now in post-production and is expected to give Beatles fans an unprecedented look at the Fab Four.\u00a0 Info about its release and distribution is expected soon.<\/p>\n

CAVE MAN–Ron talks about the Bear essentials of Imagine’s new series for Lifetime.<\/p><\/div>\n

Imagine is also producing the “Clan of the Cave Bear” TV series for Lifetime\u00a0 Here’s a link to a trailer<\/a> for the series that features Ron.<\/p>\n

And in July the Directors Guild of America announced that Ron is one of five people who will be recipients of the 2015 DGA Honors, recognizing contributions to American culture through film and television.\u00a0 Ron and his fellow honorees will receive their awards at a ceremony on October 15 in New York City.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Betty Lynn<\/strong>\u00a0 had fans arriving by the carloads and even busloads for her monthly meet-and-greet session at the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy on July 17.\u00a0 She’s there the third Friday of most months, including this Friday, Aug. 21, when the Museum will help her celebrate her birthday a few days early.\u00a0 Y’all come!<\/p>\n

Rodney Dillard<\/strong> and the Dillard Band have been back in the recording studio in Nashville last week and again this week.\u00a0 They’re working on a new album that’s scheduled for release in early 2016.\u00a0 After Nashville, Rodney and the band will be on their way to Troy, N.C., for the annual DARE fundraiser with Maggie Peterson<\/strong> and the troupe of Mayberry tribute artists.<\/p>\n

Karen Knotts<\/strong> has just completed a mini-tour of her popular “Tied Up in Knotts” stage show in Indiana and at the first Mayberry Pie Festival in Lebanon, Ky.\u00a0 Next stop for her show is Mayberry Days in September.<\/p>\n

\"CRIME<\/a>

\"AlCheccoColor\"<\/a>We’re sad to report the passing of Al Checco<\/strong>, who memorably appeared in two TAGS episodes, “The Bank Job” (Episode #76) and “If I Had a Quarter Million” (Episode #149).\u00a0 He died of natural causes at his home in Studio City on July 19, two days short of his 94th birthday.<\/p>\n

Al was born in Pittsburgh, Penn.,\u00a0 on July 21, 1921. He interrupted his college career at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) to enlist in the Army during World War II.\u00a0 He was part of a unit that entertained troops in the Pacific.\u00a0 Don Knotts was a ventriloquist in the same unit, and the two were great friends from then on.<\/p>\n

\"AlCheccoBankJob\"<\/a>

TWO CATCH A THIEF–Al Checco as wannabe robber Howie in “The Bank Job.”<\/p><\/div>\n

Al was a prominent speaker at the memorial service for Don Knotts in 2006.\u00a0 After that, Al shared some additional memories about Don and their experiences together with TAGSRWC.\u00a0 Here’s a link to that story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Al finished his degree in drama after the war and then headed to Broadway, where he worked behind the scenes and as a performer.\u00a0 He returned to Broadway in the 1990s as a performer in Crazy for You<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"DRAWING<\/a>

DRAWING CONCLUSION–Barney gets the drop on Al Checco (as Hennessey), who later returns the favor with drops of his own for Barney.<\/p><\/div>\n

Al had a long career as a classic character actor for TV and movies.\u00a0 He performed in everything from episodes of TV’s “Batman” (as Dove, a top henchman of the Penguin) and a sergeant in an a episode of “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” to roles in Helter Skelter<\/em> (as victim Leno LaBianca) and episodes of “The Rockford Files” to his last guest role on the hit sitcom “Scrubs” in 2004.<\/p>\n

Of special interest to Mayberry fans are his roles with Don Knotts in The Incredible Mr. Limpet<\/em>, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken <\/em>and The Reluctant Astronaut<\/em>, and with Andy Griffith in Angel in My Pocket<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Al could play roles from taxi drivers and bartenders to doctors and judges, including Judge John Sirica in Blind Ambition<\/em>.\u00a0 Some of his classic movies were Bullitt<\/em> (1968) with Steve McQueen, The Party<\/em> (1968) with Peter Sellers (and Jean Carson, Mayberry’s “Fun Girl” Daphne and a fellow Carnegie alum) and Disney’s animated Pete’s Dragon<\/em> (1977).<\/p>\n

In 1953, Al married actress Jean Bradley.\u00a0 She sadly contracted polio while touring overseas in Oklahoma!<\/em> and died in 1955.\u00a0 Al made charitable donations in her memory throughout his life, and through his will. He never remarried.<\/p>\n

Though Al was marvelously convincing as a cunning crook not once, but twice in Mayberry, he was in real life a multi-talented man with a heart of gold. His great friendship of more than 60 years with a former Army ventriloquist is testimony to that.<\/p>\n

This is the actual original motorcycle and sidecar from the “Barney’s Sidecar” episode. TAGSRWC members Mark and Mary Enger with sons David and Dalton recently visited the cycle at its home at Buffalo Smokehouse Barbecue & Museum in Salida, Colo.
