Welcome to the Weaver’s Newsletter Mar/Apr 2026!

Hello Mayberry and welcome to another Weaver’s Newsletter! It’s always good to spend time thinking about and reading about the goings-on around Mayberry. It’s been 65 years that we have enjoyed the people of the town of Mayberry, and it just never gets old.

Mr. Weaver outside Weaver's Department Store

I think about the people who live in our hometown, and it makes me smile. I laugh along with Andy ‘cuz I see Barney, Floyd, Goober, Gomer, and the rest of the Mayberry gang do things that in real life would likely drive me crazy.

I was watching “Barney and the Choir” just yesterday, and seeing how Barney behaves when he thinks he can sing and everybody else knows he can’t. That behavior in real life would be more than I could handle. But seeing them do that on “The Andy Griffith Show,” and loving the characters like I do, it only makes me smile as Andy suffers. Well, not just Andy; everybody in the choir suffers. I guess that’s why it’s okay because it’s happening in Mayberry. And because, well, it’s Barney. And we all know how Barney behaves. We expect it.

Is that why we love it? Because we know these people who live in our hometown so well? Because we know what to expect and even anticipate the behavior? I guess there’s something to be said for that, because it feels familiar. It’s comforting. These people are our neighbors.

It’s too bad most of us don’t have neighbors like that in the real world. People that we know, understand, and put up with. How many of us don’t even know the names of the people who live next door to us? I’ve lived in the same house for almost 30 years and I have neighbors on four sides of my house, and I only know the names of one of them. Isn’t that kind of sad?

I mean, it is my fault that I don’t know their names. I can certainly ask, but I don’t. Or, even more truthfully, I have asked, but I can’t seem to remember. It’s sad I can’t remember names, but it’s the truth. Oh, I can remember their dog’s name, but the person’s name that lives beside me seems to just float right out of my mind. Maybe I’m a lot more like Floyd than I’d like to admit.

I’m not saying that any of us are bad because we don’t know everything about our neighbors. But I do sometimes wonder what the world would be like if those of us who love Mayberry actually tried to make Mayberry real in our own neighborhood.

I guess that’s a little philosophical meandering from Floyd, but maybe something for us all, myself most of all, to think about. Do what we can to make Mayberry real in our own world. What a nice goal to have.

In the meantime, I’m going to keep laughing at the people who live in our hometown every chance I get so that I have that Mayberry spirit inside that I might actually share with others. I encourage you to do the same.

Mayberry – I Love Lucy Festival

Mayberry - Lucy Festival

It’s not long now until Mayberry fans will gather for the Mayberry I Love Lucy Festival in Granville, Tenn. There may not even be enough time for you to plan to be there, but if you can, I certainly hope you will be.

RETURN TO MAYBERRY-Dennis Rush and Keith Thibodeaux return to Granville this year!
Granville, Tenn – Dennis Rush & Keith Thibodeaux holding court.

Randall and the other volunteers that put on the event in Granville have worked so hard to make their town into Tennessee’s Mayberry town, and they want to share it with us all. For the festival weekend, we’re going to have folks from everywhere driving into the town that is even smaller than Mayberry.

Keith Thibodeaux (Johnny Paul) and Dennis Rush (Howie)  are the special guests from the show. Dixie Griffith,  Karen Knotts, and Peter Ackerman (Miss Ellie’s boy)  are special guests from families on the show. Neil Brower and Randy Turner are special guests that write about the show. And a whole troupe of tribute artists who dress up and pretend to be people from the show—they’re all going to be there.

The main events are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 10th and 11th, right in the center of downtown Granville, Tennessee. There are so many things scheduled that you really need to come both days. You see, Granville is so small they don’t have a venue that can hold all the people, so they have events scheduled throughout the day on both Friday and Saturday that overlap; if you can’t go to one on Friday, you get tickets to go to that event on Saturday because one starts 30 minutes after the other, so you can’t do them both.

There’s not room in most of the events to handle all the people who might want to attend both, as I mentioned above, so they spread them out throughout the weekend to try to make it as easy as possible for people to get to see their most desired show.

Granville Tributes 2025
Granville, Tenn. – Most of the tribute artists, cast member, and children of cast at the Mayberry – I Love Lucy Festival.

Saturday night wraps up with the grand finale event, which is unlike any other you’ve attended at a Mayberry event before. You see, since the venues are small, you have a progressive show—kind of like a progressive dinner, if you’ve ever been to one of those. You start at one show (it’s 20 minutes long), then you move to another venue and have another 20-minute show. That continues until you have gone through three or four shows and a dinner. You’ve got Elvis singing to you while you eat, you’ve got Little Ricky/Johnny Paul Jason and Howie  entertaining you at another event, you’ve got a group of Mayberry tribute artists over at the gazebo with Floyd the Barber at the barber shop, and you’ve got Charlene, Briscoe, Ernest T., and Hoggette Winslow over at the Darling cabin doing a show there. And of course, we have our special guests from the show’s families, like Karen, Dixie and Peter, fit into one of those shows for you to enjoy. Like Opie might have said, “It’s a sight!”

Make plans to come if you possibly can. I know that the folks there in Granville would appreciate it. And I know you’ll enjoy it. If you don’t leave with a smile on your face after being there, I’ll have Floyd give you a free haircut next time you see him.

For information on tickets, visit GranvilleTN.com.

If you can’t make it to Granville, or even if you can, check the Event Calendar below to see other Mayberry events you should attend if you’re able.

Becoming Thelma Lou – My Journey to Hollywood, Mayberry, and Beyond
By Betty Lynn
With Jim Clark and Tim McAbee

Long before becoming beloved by generations of Mayberry fans for her portrayal of Thelma Lou, the ever-patient sweetheart of Barney Fife, Kansas City native Betty Lynn lived a life filled with interesting adventures and fascinating people.

In her own words, augmented by 140 rare photos, Betty shares the sometimes bittersweet, often surprising, and always inspiring story of her remarkable life. From her wartime service in India and Burma to sharing the spotlight with entertainment royalty from New York to Hollywood, Betty always remained grounded in her Midwestern values and strong faith.

Yes, Betty Lynn will forever be Thelma Lou to millions of us, but, as you will discover in these pages, there is also much more to learn and love about this truly extraordinary woman. Enjoy her incredible journey!

The Essential Mayberry: Behind the Scenes of The Andy Griffith Show
by Neal Brower

Neal Brower is a long time superfan and show expert who has been writing and even teaching courses about The Andy Griffith Show for over thirty years. He has made it his mission to gather the lore about the show and especially about the writing and production of the scripts. Brower interviewed many of the show’s writers including Harvey Bullock, Everett Greenbaum, Sam Bobrick, and their partners and collected his findings in his 2011 book, Mayberry 101. As Gomer would say, “Well, golly!”

In this second & updated edition of the popular book, now called The Essential Mayberry: Behind the Scenes of The Andy Griffith Show, Brower has added the scripts written by Jack Elinson and his writing partner Charles Stewart and the rewrites of producer and story consultant Aaron Ruben, as well as material from the annotated show scripts donated by Andy Griffith to UNC Libraries. “Shazam!” Fans of The Andy Griffith Show will receive a long-awaited and more complete picture of the classic television show and its creation.

Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou) and "Floyd" discuss Barney's singing ability at Opryland Hotel in 2004
Nashville, Tenn. – Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou) and “Floyd” discuss Barney’s singing ability at Opryland Hotel in 2004

Spring has arrived and folks have been singing “Welcome, Sweet Springtime” at the top of their lungs as they enjoy, or get ready to enjoy, the warm weather. “Two Chairs, No Waiting” podcast episode number 884 spent an entire episode reviewing “Barney and the Choir” recently. I think you would enjoy it if you give it a watch because the video version shows an event from 2004 when Don Knotts himself recreated the scene of him singing “Welcome, Sweet Springtime” (or “Good Old 14a”) with the Mayberry choir. Not only was Don there at the event at the Opryland Hotel (organized and directed by Phillip Stegner), but so was Betty Lynn. She’s featured in the video as well, giving us the scoop on the fact that Barney can’t sing—”not a lick!”

The episode is worth a watch for that portion alone, so you’re invited to head over there and give it a look. I think you’re going to enjoy it; I know I did, and I was hosting it! There’s nothing like memories of Mayberry to make you smile, and I can’t believe you could possibly see Don dressed in his salt-and-pepper suit singing “Good Old 14a” and not have a grin going wide across your face.

You’ll also get some odd facts known by few about “Barney and the Choir” that might just add to your Mayberry knowledge. I learn something every time I listen to it; I wrote down the odd facts myself, but I can’t remember them, so it’s always good to hear them again.

You can find these odd facts and many other things if you head to mayberry.info. It’s a wiki containing all kinds of information about The Andy Griffith Show. So if you don’t want to watch the podcast—even though you’ll miss Don and Betty recreating the “Good Old 14a” scene—you can still get a lot of the content by heading over to the Mayberry Historical Society at mayberry.info.

****Chapter News ****

The Mayberry Chapter meets up with Patrick Duffy and Linda Purl both have a Mayberry connection.
Knoxville, Tenn. – The Mayberry Chapter meets up with Patrick Duffy and Linda Purl both have a Mayberry connection.

Andy Chapter (Nashville, Tenn.) reports that TAGSRWC HQ received roof damage and was without power for eight 1/2 days during the ice storm that hit the Nashville area the end of January. The roof damage is stabilized until repairmen are able to do final repairs. No reports of Mayberry memorabilia damage was given. Mr. Wheeler Roofing will be working on the roof while Newton Monroe Painting takes care of any repainting required.

The Mayberry Chapter (Knoxville, Tenn.) members were able to meet Patrick Duffy and Linda Purl on Feb. 23. The two actors were in Knoxville promoting “Duffy’s Dough.” The two are romantically involved and partners in the Duffy’s Dough business which donates 100% of profits to hunger relief. Patrick Duffy is famous for starring in “Man from Atlantis,” as Bobby Ewing on “Dallas,” and on “Step by Step” with Suzanne Somers where he worked with guest star Don Knotts on one episode. Linda Purl has Andy Griffith connections since she played Ben Matlock’s daughter, Charlene in 23 episodes of “Matlock.” Mayberry connections are everywhere.

Colorado Fishin' Hole Whistlers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) chapter
Colorado Springs, Colo. – Colorado Fishin’ Hole Whistlers chapter had a great meeting in March 2026.

Blood Brothers (Macon, Mo.) are busy preparing to host a BIG birthday party entitled “Andy’s 100th Birthday Bash: Bluegrass, Comedy, and Mayberry Memories” at the Royal Theatre in Macon, Missouri on Saturday, May 30, 2026. All the information on the event is found in the Event Calendar above. Try to attend if you can because it’s gonna be BIG!

Colorado Fishin’ Hole Whistlers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) chapter had several folks over to their headquarters to watch episodes together and share snacks in March. Chapter leader Mark Enger had a house full of fans with their eyes glued to the TV on two levels of his house. Half the folks on the first floor and half down in the basement watching different episodes. You could move through the house and pick your favorite episode. That’s a great idea folk having lots of folks over for a Mayberry gathering.

Mother Figure (Huntsville, Ala.) chapter has been repainting and organizing the Mayberry room that some of you might have seen during the Two Chairs No Waiting podcast over the years. Jan, or as Allan refers to her – “Bloody Mary”, has required a good spring cleaning be “we’re no spring chickens anymore” so everything had to be packed, moved out, room painted, new shelves hung, and items reloaded into the room. There is about 30 years of Mayberry collecting in the room so the chapter has been finding all kinds of Mayberry treasures through this process. One item, while not a new discovery, is very special because it is Maggie Peterson’s cast lithograph from the A Mayberry Cast Reunion at Opryland – September 21-21, 1991. Each cast person who attended the event signed this artwork for Maggie. It’s currently being framed using conservation framing techniques for protection of this treasure. It will soon be displayed on the freshly repainted Mayberry room and Two Chairs studio.

Please submit an official report from your chapter for inclusion in the May/Jun 2026 issue of Weaver’s Newsletter. Weaver’s encourages all TAGSRWC chapters to email in their reports (Please add Subject: Newsletter to your email) so we can share your fun with others .

**** Chapter Update ****

Our total number of chapters started since TAGSRWC was founded in 1979 has remained the same since our last issue with the total number of chapters holding steady at 1,494!

Starting a chapter of TAGSRWC is still just as easy as it was four decades ago. You simply pick a name that hasn’t previously been selected by another group. (You can check the searchable list of chapter names already taken at www.iMayberry.com.) Then submit your chapter’s name with your location and a list of your founding members by e-mail to Goober@imayberry.com. That’s all it takes!

Whether or not you start or join a local chapter, you can always join our online “Who’s Been Messin’ Up the Bulletin Board?” chapter or any of several exclusively online chapters on Facebook (see Mayberry on the Web below).

Barber Shop Shaving Kit

Barber Shop Shaving Kit
(Each sold separately)

The 11oz white enamel camp mug features the artwork of the Two Chairs No Waiting podcast. The mug features a caricature of the podcast’s host as “Floyd the barber” sitting in a barber chair and the phrase Two Chairs No Waiting. The camp mug is made of steel with a practical handle all coated with hard wearing enamel. It resists stains and scratches and is easy to clean (handwash only).

The barber soap will certainly bring to mind a visit to Floyd’s with it’s barber pole color scheme of red, white and blue. The smell will remind you of a barbershop and it’s all natural. You can, of course, use it as just plain old hand washing soap with a patriotic coloring.

The wooden handle brush will allow you to make shaving lather just like Floyd.  A little barber soap and a mug with some warm water and this brush is exactly what you need.

You can also use it to mix up a lather for shaving that makes that nice “clep, clep, clep” sound the brush makes against the mug.

Weaver’s suggests that you use all three together but each works great on it’s own.

Mayberry Podcast

“Two  Chairs, No Waiting” is our weekly podcast of TAGS news, interviews and pretty much whatever’s happening in and around Mayberry. It’s hosted by Allan Newsome.

There’s a new episode every Tuesday (and you can watch and listen during live recording of the show on Monday evenings at 8pm ET @ live.twochairsnowaiting.com ). As of this week, there have been 884 episodes of Two Chairs since Allan launched the podcast over 17 years ago, in October 2008. Past episodes are in an online Archives in case you want to listen to or view the YouTube video installments you’ve missed. We’re sure you can find at least a few episodes you’d enjoy out of all those that are available. OH….they are all FREE!

Take some time to look around the main Mayberry Podcasts (https://iMayberry.com/podcaasts) website for various other links, including one for another outstanding Mayberry-related podcast: “Burke on Mayberry“ (hosted by TAGSRWC’s Kevin Burke since 2008). There are also links for the Mayberry Devotional hosted by Brian Rose and the Mayberry Bible Study Podcast that are no longer being produced but the content remains “evergreen.”

Mayberry Wooden Home Decor – $16-$20

Mayberry Wooden Home Decor

Weaver’s recently added several decorative wooden blocks featuring things like the American flag with the word Mayberry below, I “heart” Mayberry, “It’s a Mayberry Thing,” and other Mayberry related phrases. The latest addition (not shown) is the Mayberry Framily block with the word “Framily” [fram-uh-lee] meaning: Friends who become the family we choose. Each phrase/image is on “cream” color background.

Rustic blocks are a fun way to add personality to any shelf or mantel; the perfect shelf sitter! High-quality home decor handcrafted and made to complement any room.

These wooden decor products are perfectly imperfect! Each piece is individually handmade in the U.S.A. making your sign a truly one-of-a-kind piece. Sizes vary depending upon your choice.

Andy Griffith Show Squad Car 1964– $60.00

ROLLS CHOICE–Even more valuable than that gold truck that came through town!

BACK IN STOCK
after being out of stock for a few years

Mr. Weaver has been asked if there was a Mayberry patrol car collectable that is larger scale than the “hot wheels” size  Johnny Lightning replica and we finally found one.

The car is Die-Cast metal body and chassis with amazing detail.  This limited edition collectable is 1:43 scale (about 5.5 inches by 2.5 inches)  and comes with a nice clear plastic display case. The Mayberry Squad Car design is a wonderful addition to your Mayberry collection. The car is a 1964 Ford Galaxie.
