This is the fifth edition of the Weaver’s Newsletter for 2023 and it’s the time of year that the holiday season begins here in Mayberry. The “holiday’s” could be said to begin the last full weekend of September for Mayberry fans. That’s when Mayberry Days brings so many fans together in Mt. Airy, NC to share the feeling of being with friends, family and fellowship. We have a report from Mayberry Days below.

2024 Mayberry Day-by-Day Flip Book Calendar -$21.00
The calendar consists of 366 days of all-new fun facts. Creator Randy Turner tried something different this time and wrote an “All Holiday” edition of the calendar. Each bit of daily trivia is tied to an official or unofficial holiday for the entire year!.
The calendar stands on a built-in easel and is designed to be used as a ring-bound desk calendar throughout the year with pages that are flipped over each day instead of being removed. Old man Remshaw has been fixing things up around his house and it being the harvest season, he has once again brought the jack-o-lantern patterns of some of our favorite Mayberry residents out of storage for you to download and use.
Mr. Remshaw found it in his heart to light the way to the old Remshaw place with pumpkins carved to look like our favorite Deputy, mechanic, barber and Andy’s favorite son. Remshaw saw this baseball hunting trespasser as he was looking onto this world from the world beyond through that haunted painting above the fireplace.
It sure does feel like those eyes are following you everywhere when you walk around Remshaw’s house. Also, be on the watch out for a floating axe Barney said he saw when he was there.
You can join old man Remshaw in leading folks to your home with the lovable face of Barney Fife shining the way from his Barn-O-Lantern.
Remshaw also has Floyd, Goober and Opie joining Barney with their own patterns .
Your house will be the envy of your neighborhood this Halloween, or anytime, when you carve this Barney Fife, Floyd the Barber, Goober Pyle, or Opie jack-o-lantern…or all FOUR!
You just need some carving tools and a printed out paper patterns. Take the printed pattern and tape it to the pumpkin. Using a straight pin, go around the outline of the pattern leaving a “connect the dots” pattern on the skin of the pumpkin that can guide you as your carve the pumpkin. There are videos on YouTube that could help you learn to carve the pumpkin, if you’re afraid to try it without more help.
These designs are not super easy, so if you are new to the pumpkin carving, it is strongly recommended that you try out one or two of the easier patterns before attempting one of these. They mainly just take time and patience and you’ll be able to do one yourself.
You may need to change the size of the design before you print it, depending on the size of the pumpkin you’re using the pattern upon. You can also print it first, and then change the size by enlarging or reducing it with a photocopier.
Happy carving! It takes some time but it comes out looking really good! They’ll each take you about an hour to carve the first time but you’ll get faster as you get the hang of it. Give it a try!!

Randy will be presenting a talk titled “How Andy Griffith Became Andy Taylor,” which will examine Andy’s early career and the origin of “The Andy Griffith Show.”

****Chapter News ****
There won’t be much chapter news in this issue for the same reason stated above but Weaver’s *did* receive on recent note from the Blood Brothers (Macon, Mo.) chapter. This chapter has been very active in keeping the Mayberry spirit flowing west of the Mississippi river. Their sub-chapter, called The Mayberry Card Guild, met on October 9 and learned a new technique to make autumn cards. You might recall, from our April Newsletter that this wonderful group put together treat boxes and delivered to caregivers at four local nursing homes. I’m sure these autumn cards will also be used to share the Mayberry spirit,

**** Mayberry Days 2023****
The 34th annual Mayberry Days event in Mount Airy, North Carolina was held the last full weekend of September and what a wonderful celebration it was. The week starts on a Monday but I was not able to arrive until Wednesday so for this report we’ll start from there and go forward. But I did want to mention, if you plan to attend Mayberry Days in the future, you might want to plan to make an entire week out of it so you can have a few days of living that’s easy and “fairly” slow.
The first stop for Jan and me on that Wednesday was The Snappy Lunch. We wanted be sure we got a pork chop sandwich because it had been well over a year since our last. During the 2022 Mayberry days, Snappy lunch was so busy that we couldn’t get in to get a pork chop sandwich and Snappy was closed during the Mayberry Meet-up back in July so we had been saving up our hunger for a long time. We were not disappointed.
You may remember that The Snappy Lunch is mentioned in the episode entitled “Andy the Matchmaker” of The Andy Griffith Show. As a fan of The Andy Griffith Show I felt obligated to make sure I ate at The Snappy Lunch and since they are famous for the pork chop sandwich I had to have one. It’s probably my 50th one over the years and that could be an underestimate. As soon as we got to The Snappy Lunch we began to see fellow Mayberry fans that we’ve met over the years at Mayberry Days or at other Mayberry events. It was great to see them and catch up while we waited on our sandwiches.,
Wednesday is a good day to walk around and visit the shops on Main Street in Mount Airy. Mayberry head over to the Dairy Center get some ice cream or just enjoy the “Mayberry like” atmosphere that is Mount Airy.
On Thursday folks begin to gather over at the Cross Creek Country Club about 10:00 a.m. to get ready to play in The Emmett golf tournament and to meet the special guests that are in attendance for the Mayberry Days weekend. Tribute artists, cast members, golfers, and special guests are all there happy to see one another and take photos with fans.
The golf tournament “tee-off” is usually a fairly small crowd, not counting all the golfers, so it’d be a great time to come if you want to see the special guests or visit with the tribute artists. Not all the special guest is there because some have not arrived yet but as a fan I think you would enjoy it. You can always come just for the opening ceremonies of The Emmett “tee-off” and then head back over to Mount Airy to do more fun things in the downtown area or up on the Blue Ridge Parkway while the tournament is played.
Thursday evening is the golf dinner when the golfers receive their trophies and awards for best round, longest drive, longest putt, and even highest round of golf. The highest round of golf is given a trophy that looks like Barney’s bullet and, believe it or not, there are some teams that strive to win that trophy rather than try to actually win the tournament.
The entertainment following the meal this year was provided by Daniel Roebuck. He did a great presentation about being a “sidekick ” throughout his career. Daniel played sidekicks in many of his film and television roles over the years beginning with the role of “Cliff” opposite Andy Griffith’s “Matlock.” It was a great presentation that everyone really enjoyed.
On Friday the day begins with the mayor’s Proclamation at the Blackman Amphitheater. This is the Opening Ceremonies for the Mayberry Days weekend and all the cast members, tribute artist, and most of the fans attend. This is another great time for you as a fan to be able to see everyone and take photos.
Special awards were given to Floyd’s City Barber Shop and The Snappy Lunch during the mayor’s Proclamation ceremony. They were both given the “You’re the Cats” award in honor of all they’ve done to make fans of The Andy Griffith Show feel the Mayberry spirit when visiting Mount Airy and for their support of Mayberry Days. Dick Atkins, who worked a the producer of Andy Griffith’s movie Murder in Coweta County (1983), received the key to the city of Mount Airy and all of the special guests were recognized and address the crowd.
Following the ceremony there were shows by our special guests happening throughout the weekend.
The Mayberry Days Trivia Championship happened mid-afternoon Friday with past champion Jim Sherrill coming in first place for his 6th victory with 2022 champion, Mike Jones, coming in second. As a fun note, Jim has been the champion in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2023 and Mike was champion in 2021 & 2022. These are amazing feats of trivial knowledge considering the Trivia Championship had five or six previous champions competing each year.
Karen Knotts, Rodney Dillard and the Dillard band, Daniel Roebuck, and Ronnie Schell all had shows on Friday as did author Randy Turner. People often ask how many were in attendance at Mayberry Days. That’s a hard question to answer but all the shows were sold out, with some even having second performances scheduled for Saturday so, it was a good crowd with a lot of people.
Rounding out that evening, The Bellamy Brothers performed at the Andy Griffith Playhouse while Elvis and Patsy Cline entertained at the Earl theater. There is never a shortage of things to do during Mayberry Days and thus far we’ve only covered through Friday. The big day of Saturday was still to come.
Saturday kicked off early with a 9:00 a.m. parade down Main Street, Mount Airy. The special guest, tribute artist, cars, candy being thrown and all the things you see in a parade are found during the Mayberry Days parade. This year, there weren’t any bands because we did have some dampness in the air as the remnants of a hurricane was passing through the area that morning. The drizzling rain didn’t dampen the spirits of all those lining the parade route nor those of us that were in the parade. Smiles were found everywhere.
The Mayberry Days auction began as soon as the parade finished. They’ were amazing items up for bid. All the proceeds go to the Surry Arts Council to fund future Mayberry Days. If you are able to attend Mayberry Days, you’ll want to at least drop by to see the items up for bid because there are some very creative people in The Andy Griffith Show community who donate amazing things related to our hometown.
Neil Brower hosted his Professor Brower’s Class presentation with two of the children and one grandchild of Harvey Bullock as his special guest. This is something I hate that you may have missed. Hopefully an upcoming episode of the Two Chairs No Waiting podcast will allow everyone the opportunity to see this amazing interview. If you don’t realize, Harvey wrote 31 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and 21 episodes of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. He was responsible for episodes like The Pickle Story, Mr. McBeevee, and so many of our Mayberry favorites.
Things were happening all over town all day Saturday. There was Wally’s service where you can go and ride in a Mayberry Squad Car and tour the town of Mount Airy, there was Mayberry Idol at the Blackman Amphitheater where you could be entertained by fellow fans, and there are so many other options for things to choose from that it would be hard to pick which things to do.
Mayberry Days comes to a unofficial end on Saturday night with the Colonel Tim’s Talent time show at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. A 2-hour, and sometimes a little more, show of Mayberry fun and laughter. It’s hard to describe but it’s kind of like an old TV variety show that’s full of Mayberry for you to enjoy. I would recommend you don’t miss it but I am biased because I’m in and emcee the show.
Mayberry Days continues on Sunday with a morning chapel service, but most people are already heading home so attendance is fairly light. As Jan and I drive home, we spend our travel time talking about our memories from our time at Mayberry Days and begin thinking about the next year.

I encourage you if you ever have a chance, come to Mayberry Days because even all the things I’ve mentioned above don’t capture the great feeling of seeing people that you’ve met before or that you will meet again all of which share your love of our hometown, Mayberry.

Even Ben Weaver has his own Facebook page at www.facebook.com/weaversdepartmentstore. It features all the latest in Mayberry items and merchandise news.
And TAGSRWC also has a growing presence on www.MeWe.com. Mayberry’s pioneering outpost on MeWe is “Sittin’ on a Velvet Pillow” chapter, headed up by Lynn Thomas. That group was followed in short order by Allan Newsome and the “Two Chairs, No Waiting” Podcast and by “Only One Word I Can Think of…Big!” (a TAGSRWC group that’s also on Facebook), administered by Myron Clark and Tommy Rainwater and an able crew.
In case you’re not familiar with MeWe, it’s similar to Facebook a lot smaller and a bit more calm. It has no ads so it’s more along the lines of a quiet street like Willow or Woods Way as compared to the hustle and bustle of Main Street in downtown Mayberry. (“You’re on my foot! You’re on my foot!”) If you’re looking to “relax, slow down, take it easy,” then you might want to check out some of the TAGSRWC groups on MeWe.
